Ruth Brewer Gillis of Pinola, the long time and popular owner of Gillis General Merchandise, went to be with the Lord on July 7, 2011, with her beloved sister Julea Gillis by her side. She was 87. Miss Ruth was passionate about serving the community through “The Store” which she did for 63 years along with her husband Neil Clark and son Mack.

To the thousands she touched in her prime she was a bigger-than-life figure. A merchandiser at heart, Ruth’s business influence spread to trade shows through-out the South where she was respected for her ability to sell and serve. Her service included a lifetime at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 4 years as an Election Commissioner in Simpson County, and years of committed support at the Jackson International Speedway operated by her son.
She was preceded in death by her parents Uhlan and Effie Brewer, her husband Neil Clark, and son-in-law William A. Davis. She is survived by her children, Gwen Gillis, Mack Gillis and Penny Fisher; sister, Julea Gillis; brother, M.E. Brewer; grandchildren, Harrison and Lauryl Fisher; nieces, Evelyn Bryant, Debbie Oliver, Susan Brewer and Karen Brewer; nephew, Alan Brewer; grand-nephew, Robert Hayes Oliver and Jon Oliver; grand-nieces, Rachel Little, Catherine Bryant and Caroline Nick.
