 SARA CONERLY BRUCE MENDENHALL, MS

 

Sara Lucille Conerly Bruce, 83, passed away January 16, 2013, at home in Mendenhall, Mississippi.  She was born April 18, 1929, in Poplarville, Mississippi to Emmitt Robert Conerly and Callie Faye Daniels Conerly.

 Mrs. Bruce grew up in Oakvale in Lawrence County and graduated from Copiah-LincolnHigh School and Copiah-LincolnCommunity College.  She went on to graduate from Mississippi College with a degree in Elementary Education and became a dedicated teacher in Simpson County for 25 years .  She remained very fond of Copiah-Lincoln and MC throughout her entire life and a scholarship was established at Co-Lin by her family in honor of Sara’s 80th birthday.

While Sara was children’s minister at Yazoo CityMethodist Church in 1950, she met a handsome young school teacher from Ackerman named Maxie Bruce.  They were married for 61 years until his death in 2011. Sara and Maxie made Simpson County their home and were active members of Mendenhall United Methodist Church until their health declined.  She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Friends of the Library, Mendenhall Business Women’s Club, Trustees of the MendenhallCommunity Center, and a community volunteer. 

 After being “converted” by her husband, Mrs. Bruce became an avid Mississippi State fan and together they attended most home football and baseball games for many years. She was a loyal, dedicated wife and loving caregiver for Maxie through the many years he suffered from multiple sclerosis.  She was also a devoted mother and grandmother and will be terribly missed by her family.

 Mrs. Bruce was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Maxie Bruce, “second mother,” Evelyn Thomas Conerly, brother Robert Conerly, as well as her parents, Emmitt and Callie Conerly.

She is survived by her son, Maxie Bruce Jr. and wife Charlotte of Waynesboro, MS; daughter Melody Bruce Musgrove and husband Gov. Ronnie Musgrove of Madison, MS; grandchildren Stacie Bruce Scott  and husband Will of Houston, MS, Ryan Bruce and wife Brandy of Hattiesburg, MS, Brooke Bruce Ward  and husband John Robert of Laurel, MS, Brittney Bruce McAfee  and husband Matt of Starkville, MS, Michael Smith  and wife Maggie of Madison, MS, Erin Smith of Jackson, MS, Jordan Musgrove of Washington, DC, and Carmen Rae Musgrove Huang  and husband Ian of Oxford, MS; great-grandchildren Carter Scott, Lee Scott, Keagan Ward, Cole Ward, Gracie Bruce, Reese McAfee, Sally McAfee, and Evelyn Smith; brothers Tommy Conerly, Dennis Conerly and wife Nella of Tupelo, MS , brothers-in-law Dr. Thomas Bruce and wife Tecoah of Berkeley, CA, Boyce Bruce and wife Mary Alice of Ackerman, MS, sisters-in-law Beth Conerly of Sandy Ridge, NC, and June Bruce of Portland, OR, as well as many dear nieces, nephews and friends.

 Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Friday, January 18, 2013, at Mendenhall United Methodist Church followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will be at Enon Cemetery in Ackerman.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Sara Conerly Bruce Scholarship, Copiah Lincoln Community College Foundation, P O Box 649, Wesson, MS 39191 or to Mendenhall United Methodist Church, 331 Ash St., Mendenhall, MS  39114.
